That’s what it was this weekend. Even for the most playful and spirited of puppies.

(This is Honey, and she belongs to our friend.)
Not to whine, but it was way, way too much for me, and though we had fun – an art show, some live music, and time spent with friends and pups – I was exhausted, dried out, sweaty, and a little grumpy by Sunday evening. I am just not a hot weather person, y’all. And I hope (perhaps a fool’s hope) that the brief heatwave we had on Saturday and Sunday is not a sign of things to come for this summer. But I have a hunch it’s going to be exactly what we’re in for.
So, in the spirit of my last few posts, here’s a question: What are your favorite ways to stay cool and beat the heat? Because I’m certainly not very good at it, and I need all the help I can get.
Inside a cool, dark, air conditioned room with an overhead ceiling fan and a desk fan. Iced water, iced sparkling water, sometimes iced herbal tea. ( don’t do caffeine after breakfast or I don’t sleep that night.) If I must be outside, it is after the sun goes behind the trees except for those dire times I have to take the recycles over, go to the grocery store, or mow the grass. I doubt this is what you had in mind, but it’s all I got! They don’t call it dog days for nothing.

Very true! And I am not ready for them. If this weekend is any indication, I think it’s going to be a very indoor sort of summer for me.

Hey girl, you are young…waaaay young. All things in moderation as I grew up hearing. Just dip your occasional toe in the heat. My dad did manual labor in it and he live to be 93. 🙂
Just be sure to take care of yourself in the process, and ain’t no shame in staying inside if you can.

Aw what a cute puppy. And yes it was hot in the DMV this weekend. I don’t care too much for the heat, Fall and Winter is my happy place.

Same! As soon as it starts getting hot outside, I’m already ready for fall. I do love summer for other reasons – mostly that people have more free time and seem to feel happier and such – but I’m definitely a winter person.

Ironically, sauna. Hotter we get the body, the more the body cools itself naturally after a session; let alone the adaptive element. Better to lean into discomfort and adjust that to avoid it altogether.

Now I wish I had access to a sauna!

Running with excessive clothing can produce a similar effect; clothing that doesn’t breathe so well. Also serves to boost circulation, the body’s natural warming.

Sorry, should have phrased that, temperature *regulation*, not just warming.

I’ll have to give it a try!

A lady I worked with in a garden center years ago drank hot coffee all summer and swore it kept her cool. Hopefully the next few days will cool you off, I was certainly chilly today.

I love coffee, so that’s worth trying! It’s been much cooler these last couple of days, but with summer on the way, I know it’s temporary.

Always a good choice, in most any circumstance.

Awww Honey is a sweetheart. It sounds like a busy weekend and a great one that was made difficult with the heat and feeling so exhausted. I hope this week cools a little and you get some time for recuperation.
I have a solution for you, Katie. HOUSE SWAP!
My body no longer fares well with the cold or anything below 20 degrees, which is about 360 days of the year here. I don’t do well in super heat either physically but I don’t care, at least I could wear a t-shirt and strip off the extra 5 layers I usually wear.
I’ll trade you. I’ll go there, and you come to the cooler & rather grey UK. Pleeeease?! 🙏
Caz xx

I would gladly head to the UK for a bit! I like rainy, cool weather. 😉 You’d have to deal with my crazy house, though. It won’t fall down or anything. Probably.
It has cooled down a bit this week, which has been such a welcome reprieve, but I know it’s temporary. I’m grateful to live in a beautiful place, but man, the summers in Virginia just seem to get more and more brutal.

It was so hot here today and will be for the rest of the week.

It’s hot here right now, too. Dislike. 😦 I love summer, but I’d much rather be too cold than too hot. The heat is basically my least favorite part.

Stay hydrated because the heat is just getting juiced up.
