The Waiting (A Poem)

It’s the waiting that’s the worst –
Sleepless nights watching the phone,
willing it to ring,
or better not to.
Those nights aren’t quiet.
They’re sitting alone in the silent dark and
wondering
wondering
wondering
what comes next.
And then the most wrenching thought:
When?
When? When?
No good time.
No right moment.
Just this: The waiting
waiting
waiting
for the one thing you never wanted.

    • Thank you so much. Graham’s dad is in the ICU – things happened really quickly and we know there won’t be a recovery, but he’s doing better than over the weekend. He sat up yesterday, was able to talk a bit, and ate some applesauce. I’ve never been so happy to hear that someone ate apple sauce. We’re hoping we can get him home and he can be cared for there, where he’ll be more comfortable and Lucy can see him.

  1. I know that feeling, it’s the worst. And even when the inevitable happens, it still shakes you up. You think you’re ready but part of you isn’t, if you know what I mean. Anyway, I really felt this poem.
