EVP 5 (A Poem)

It scares you, doesn’t it?
Here in the dark,
hemmed in by the damp, whole smell of earth and air
and the endless lapping of the water,
the spindly fingers of the trees crawling their way up into the night,
you feel it, I know,
that you’re not alone.
Yes, I’m here, and I’ll talk,
if only because you want to,
though you won’t like what I say.
You’d do well to remember, my curious friend,
to look beyond your lens and listen past your recordings
and truly see –
there are worse things haunting this place,
terrors more frightening and damned creeping in
the shadows of this world,
than me.

    • Thank you! It’s one of Bill’s, and I hope he wouldn’t mind that I used it. He’s got so many good ones from all around the area. I’ve really enjoyed writing these poems. 🙂 It’s a fun way to welcome in the spooky season.

  1. What an eerie and atmospheric poem, Katie! That line warning curious listeners to ‘look beyond your lens and listen past your recordings’ gives absolute goosebumps—it’s such a clever spin on the investigator-ghost dynamic. I completely agreed with Monkey’s Tale (Maggie) that this sets the ultimate spooky mood for October! Like Suzassippi, it was so much fun reading back through the earlier EVP entries to see how the haunting narrative builds. Bill’s photograph paired wonderfully with your words!
