They arrive
and darken the skies.
With a boom
and a crack,
like sprinters on a track,
they test their mettle for
the measure of a moment.
And in the end, they are
like victory β so very short,
nearly fleeting.
But never, ever sweet.

I love this one, Katie, and I love summer storms. The photograph is beautiful–looks kind of like that here now, too.

We’ve had a few big ones this week. Sometimes I love them, and sometimes they scare me. But that’s sort of like life, isn’t it? I’m always sort of in awe of them, either way.

True. I meant the average run of the mill summer storm, not the nerve-wracking tornado producing kind. π

All storms make me a little nervous, but they’re just so fascinating to watch. We’ve had several severe ones come through in the last couple of weeks, but a few that just sort of rolled through and made noise. I like those much better!

I’m so glad you enjoyed it! Strange beauty is definitely a good way to put it! Equal parts fascinating and frightening, totally uncontrollable. And thank you! I had a really wonderful day, that’s turned into a really wonderful few days. π I feel very loved.

Love the poem. Our power was out from a strong storm last week that toppled a tree (many actually) in the area and took out a pole.
Today it’s just damp, gray and gloomy. Trying to work but reflecting the weather’s mood. Needed this break to visit the site of someone who appreciates many of the things I do. Enjoyed the post about the lovely fruit scene heirloom plates.

I’m so glad you found my site! And happy that we can connect over our shared interests. π
It’s actually stormy here again today. Power’s been out all over the area, largely due to fallen trees, as well, but so far, we’ve been lucky (knock on wood…). It’s not supposed to let up until Thursday, so I’m expecting to do lots of gloomy weather writing in the coming days.

I think we’re in for a gloomy week here also. At least it’s still summer. Hope you don’t have more storm damage.

I grew up in Florida on a farm. I visit the state and family about once every five years. The summer storms are refreshing — then and now.

I love to watch them roll through! But I confess I’m a little afraid of lightning. π
